statement:
What Lies Beyond 2006-07
This series is inspired by the power of visual seduction as a way
of masking truth.
Through this new body of work, I have been exploring the use of a
paper cutting process as a means to express this idea. By juxtaposing
the cut paper image and the cast shadow created by the image, a visual
dialogue develops between the reality of the form and the reality
of the information revealed in the cast shadow. The viewer is aware
that the cast shadow is directly cast from the form, but the information
revealed in the cast shadow is slightly different than the original
work. The cut paper image visually dissolves leaving behind a lace
like structure made up of seemingly random patterns. The white paper
becomes visually submissive leaving the black shadow to reveal images
that were visually lost or hidden in the pattern of the original cutting.
These new works question our interpretations of reality as we seek
the truth.
